How do I know if my appliance qualifies for the program?

Your refrigerator and/or freezer must still be in working condition (plugged in and capable of cooling) at the time of pickup. It must be over 10 years old and have an interior volume between 10 and 25 cubic feet. It must be moveable and easily accessible. Although program participants must provide this information when they make an appointment, our team in charge of pickup will verify on site if the appliance complies with all program conditions.

How many appliances can we pick up by address?

A maximum of three appliances per household and address can be picked up throughout the entire duration of the program. We will recycle your appliances if you reside in the Province of Québec and if you are a homeowner, a tenant who owns its appliances, even if electricity costs are included in your rent or, a manager of rental properties, a commercial enterprise, a not for profit organization or a municipality.

How long will the RECYC-FRIGO program be in effect?

The RECYC-FRIGO Program, launched on March 25, 2008, will continue in 2012.

Why should I participate in the program?

There are a number of reasons to take part in this important program. When you get rid of your old, inefficient refrigerator or freezer, you save energy and reduce your electricity bill. As an example, an old refrigerator uses up to 4.8* times more energy than a new ENERGY STAR® qualified model. What's more, you take a positive step for the environment and get $30 in return for each appliance collected (a maximum of two appliances per household). Our qualified team will come to your home and collect your appliance(s) free of charge for environmentally responsible disposal.

* Ratio based on average values taken from standardized energy-consumption for various refrigerator models with interior volumes ranging between 14.5 cu.ft. and 18.5 cu.ft.

How can I get rid of my old refrigerator or freezer?

Click here to register online or contact the RECYC-FRIGO team at 1 888 525-0930 to make an appointment to have your appliance picked up within two weeks of your call. The appliance must be plugged in, empty, and accessible before the team arrives.

What makes my old appliance so harmful to the environment?

A refrigerator over 10 years old consumes an average of three times more energy than a more recent model. Replacing your old appliance helps slow ozone depletion through the elimination of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) when the old model is dismantled.

What happens to the old appliances that are collected?

The appliances that are collected are taken out of service and dismantled. Each component is then recycled or destroyed in accordance with strict environmental standards. The RECYC-FRIGO Environmental Program targets a major environmental problem by recycling 95% of the material contained in the recovered appliances.

Why don't you recycle appliances less than 10 years old?

Refrigerators or freezers under 10 years old take advantage of newer technology and consume much less energy than older models. Therefore, Hydro-Québec does not recommend that they be withdrawn from use.

How can I dispose of my refrigerator that is less than 10 years old?

If your refrigerator is less than 10 years old and you want to dispose of it, we suggest you contact a community organization that can pass it on to a family in your area.

Why do the refrigerators and freezers have to be in working condition?

The overall objective of the program is to reduce energy consumption by removing older models that are still in use. If you have a non-working appliance, we suggest that you contact your municipality so they can pick it up and dispose of it in compliance with environmental standards.

What do I get in return for my old refrigerator or freezer?

Not only do we pick up your old appliance free of charge, you will receive a $30 cheque by mail within a few weeks of its collection.

Why have you taken this Initiative?

Over and above our goal of energy efficiency, the RECYC-FRIGO Environmental Program also targets a major environmental issue by recycling 95% of the materials contained in the appliances that are collected.
